The AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals division will soon begin selling a generic version of a blockbuster painkiller called Nexium, which is now the best-selling drug in the United States, according to a release.
The pharmaceutical company is set to begin selling the generic version of AstraZeneca’s anti-inflammatory drug Nexium in the second quarter of 2019, according to a release. AstraZeneca said it is also testing a cheaper generic version of AstraZeneca’s popular heartburn drug Prevacid.
The AstraZeneca patent for Nexium expired in 2013 and the generic version will now be sold in a lower dosage form. The company said it is also evaluating its lower dosage form of Prevacid, which it hopes to be sold in the second quarter of 2019. It said it is evaluating the generic version of AstraZeneca’s other anti-inflammatory painkiller Nexium for the market.
“We are evaluating whether this is the most appropriate product for our patients and if we can continue to offer patients the benefits of lower doses of a specific drug in a lower dosage form,” said Dr. John H. Lechleiter, president of AstraZeneca’s Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacture, who is working on a “potential clinical trial of a new generic version of AstraZeneca.”
